Representing the Ministry of Education, the Deputy Minister for Educational Management, Idel Vexler, received the rights for the program from the CEO of BBVA Banco Continental, Eduardo Torres-Llosa. "The commitment that our Bank undertook was to design a program that helps to increase the poor levels of reading comprehension in the country. Now, having seen the program's efficiency, we are pleased to give it to the State and help more Peruvian schoolchildren to receive a good education", explained Eduardo Torres-Llosa.

The Deputy Minister for Education, Idel Vexler, thanked all of the experts who helped the Bank's Foundation to develop the program for their effort, and he promised to ensure that more Peruvian schoolchildren have access to this methodology. "In our country we have a good idea about the reality of our education, but few specific initiatives to solve all of these problems. This new methodology that we now have available and ready to apply to our schoolchildren is therefore very important".

The Chairman of the National Education Board, Andrés Cardó Franco and the Director of Empresarios por la Educación, José Miguel Morales attended the event. They stressed the importance of private company participation in the development of educational methodologies.

A year after the launch of Fundación BBVA Banco Continental's "Leer es estar adelante" program in 19 schools in the five regions in which the program operates (Arequipa, Ayacucho, Lima, Loreto and Piura), the "Instituto Cuanto" assessed the results in accordance with the criteria that the Ministry of Education applies. In accordance with the latest assessments by national and international organisations, reading comprehension in Peruvian schools are the lowest in the region and in the world. The national average reveals that two out of every ten schoolchildren understand what they read. With the "Leer es estar adelante" program, the average has gone up considerably, to six out of every ten.
