BBVA Banco Continental of Peru and Philips present a system of eco-efficient lighting
17 November 2009
Small and medium-sized enterprises in Peru will see their energy costs reduced by up to 50% thanks to a new system of eco-efficient lighting. Thanks to an agreement between BBVA Banco Continental and Philips, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) could see their energy costs reduced by up to 50% through the introduction of a system of eco-efficient lighting. The system, called Iluminación Eficiente (Efficient Lighting), was presented in the presence of the Minister for the Environment of Peru, Antonio Brack. It aims to promote reduced and more efficient use of energy in lighting by businesses.
This product is aimed at medium and small-sized companies and institutions that make intensive use of lighting systems. This could include manufacturing industry, hospitals, clinics, universities, schools, hotels, restaurant, mines and pharmaceutical laboratories.
BBVA Banco Continental will finance up to 100% of the investment in the lighting system and its installation, with a term of up to 24 months, depending on the recovery period of the investment, and at a preferential rate.
“Small and medium-sized enterprises interested in the project will have a preferential rate for the finance and free technical advice from Philips," announced Ignacio Quintanilla, head of the Innovation and Development department of BBVA Banco Continental.
A 5,000-dollar Iluminación Eficiente project can provide an average energy saving of 12 KW. “If we implement 300 of these projects, it would save 3.6 MW of energy, or an amount equivalent to the electrical power used by 1,000 poor homes,” explained Renzo Peroni, lighting manager of Philips Peruana.
Around 19% of global energy use is for lighting. More efficiency in this area has a direct impact on energy saving and thus on the environment. “The energy saved by this system would also enable us to eliminate millions of tons of CO2 every year," added Peroni.
The project has the support of the Ministry of the Environment of Peru. Participating companies will be included the ministry’s annual Directorio Rumbo a la Ecoeficiencia Empresarial (Path to Business Eco-Efficiency Directory), which aims to highlight companies that engage in actions aimed at saving resources and mitigating or preventing adverse impact on the environment.
