CAI Guo-Qiang: I WANT TO BELIEVE

Guggenheim Museum Bilbao
From March 16 to September 20, 2009

This retrospective, curated by Alexandra Munroe, and previously on display at the Solomon R. Guggenheim and the National Art Museum of China in Beijing, presents and delves into the complexities of a highly diverse and multimedia art.
Cai Quo Qiang is an artist with his proposals has convulsed the conventional parameters of art of our time. Quanzon born in Fujian Province, China, in 1957, emerged in the eighties as a member of the emerging art scene in China in the post-reform era. In 1986 he moved to Japan where he specializes in the use of gunpowder to create his famous drawings and explosive events and actions. Since 1995 lives in New York. In the meantime has increased his stake in the contemporary art scene. Their social projects establish ties with local communities to produce art events in places not intended for them, like military bunkers. His recent work has expanded to include facilities for large-format sculptures and allegories that retrieve the signs and symbols of Chinese culture and expose the dialectics of local history and globalization.
